Religion and Theology have been deeply embedded in the University’s history since 1822. While rooted in an area which is rich in religious heritage, our programmes provide insights into the religious diversity of the 21st-century world.

The ancient cultures around the Mediterranean inspire and influence even today. Investigation of ancient societies in their own right, and the use we make of them today, has never been more important. Ancient World programmes at UWTSD enable you to build up a thorough grounding in civilisations from around the globe through several millennia.

History is not simply something to be read – it provides our lives with frames of reference. At UWTSD our Historical Studies courses explore interpretations of how societies and cultures perceive themselves, and how these perceptions have changed over time, while our Celtic Studies courses cover subjects such as medieval and Arthurian literature, Welsh language, gender studies, and folklore. 

Homer’s Odyssey, Vergil’s Aeneid, The New Testament, and Petronius’ Satyricon: texts that have fascinated through the ages. To get to grips with the world from which they derive, understanding their language is a vital tool. Studying Ancient Languages at UWTSD enables you to acquire skills to read and use original Greek or Latin texts, whilst putting texts in their wider historical contexts. 

Every one of us has looked up at the night sky and marvelled at its beauty and immenseness.  An illuminated night sky gives us an insight into just how small we are in comparison to the scale of the universe.  Studying Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at UWTSD offers you the opportunity to explore how humans, through history, have drawn on the skies to explain their place in the world.

The world around us is shaped in large part by people’s religious beliefs. Religious traditions offer the means by which vast swathes of the world understand and reflect on the meaning of life. Interfaith Studies allows you to study the content of religious traditions and the ways in which they have come to interact during their long, and often contentious, histories.
